Hering Family
The collector of interest is surgeon Dr. William Hering (1803-1876). His brother, George Edward was an artist who exhibited at the RA [Once A Week 1862 page 162 (Archer) col 2, lines 22 & 31]. There are other Herings listed in London directories but at the time of writing we do not know whether or not they are related. William Hering was the owner of 'Rochester Castle and the Adjacent Grounds' in 1860. The fate of this picture is beyond the scope of our present research but it can be said that Dr. William Hering was definitely in posession on 14th May 1860 when it was auctioned (lot 168) and bought in. Thereafter it would have been returned to him [Christie's e-mail] and according to Archer was still in Hering's possession in 1862. The picture was next sold at auction in 1872 (Christie's 1872-06-29) in the possession of May and Co.
Another question arises which may be within current scope and that is whether Hering had other pictures in the sale of 14th May 1860. At lot 169 on page 23, immediately following Hering's 'Rochester Castle and the Adjacent Grounds', there is another JMW Turner; 'A view of a building in the course of erection'. (Lot 169 was not found in Graves). Two early JMW Turner oils next to each other in a sale suggests the same seller; it is evident that the lots in this section of the catalogue are not in alphabetical order, is it possible that they are ordered by 'seller'? It is noted that there was a George Edward Hering picture close by at lot 176 and another in the same section at 135. In an adjacent 'Drawings' section, there are three JMW Turner's at 126, 127 and 128. (Christie's Sale Catalogue 12th & 14th May 1860 Does not give much indication as to whether Dr. Hering had just one consignment in the sale or more. The first two sections of the second day appear to be miscellaneous properties and are not presented in alphabetical order by artist's names. Lot 169 mentioned above may have belonged to Hering, including 168, 169 and nearby, lots 165 to 169 form a short alphabetic sequence ad could be Hering's pictures but this line of enquiry is outside the scope of our present investigation and must be left for the future.)
