Liverpool Exhibition 1839
This exhibition is of interest because it is the source of some works in the John Clow collection. The John Clow collection is the source of several works in the Preston Berthon collection amongst which is JMW Turner's 'The Gothic Arch' (Clow) / 'St. Augustine's Gate, Canterbury' (Berthon) which may have originated in Rochester in 1792 (a gift by Turner to the Douglas or Oldershaw family)

In this 1839 Liverpool Exhibition there are the following three works by George Lance. Due to their ill-defined titles it is impossible to be sure whether or not these are works which appear in the Winstanley, Clow sale of 1852-04-20. However, Clow definitely came into possession of 'Opening the Letter-bag' (Wright - above) and 'The Warren Bank' (Lee - above). In the Art Journal report of the Liverpool Exhiobition we find two Lance works listed together and these two appear to be Lots 24 and 25 in the Clow sale:
Turning to the third Lance work in the Liverpool Exhibition we find 'A Monk Reading'. This (in it's exact form viz: "'A Monk Reading' by George Lance") does not appear in the Winstanley, Clow sale of 1852-04-20. However, the same title ie: 'A Monk Reading', appears as the work of George Cattermole in the 1854 Liverpool Town Hall Exhibition (No. 105), lent by R B Preston, the first husband of Eleanor Leonora Berthon (of the Christies sale of 1891-05-15). In the catalogues of the exhibitions of the Society of Painters in Watercolour George Cattermole is seen exhibiting ; No. 377, 1850, 'Interior, with Monks Reading'. The question here is whether R B Preston bought his supposed "'A Monk Reading' by George Cattermole" from the Clow sale but Clow's purchase had been from the 1839 Liverpool Exhibition as "'A Monk Reading' by George Lance". The question remains unanswerd at present.
