3. Gilbert Redgrave

'A History of Water-Colour Painting in England' 1892

• 1892 Gilbert sets out clearly in his 'History of Watercolour Painting in England' that Turner's first RA exhibited oil was 'The Rising Squall'.
• On page 58 line 27 he wrote, "Even at this time he was working much in oil. As early as 1793 he exhibited 'The Rising Squall'."
• Gilbert Redgrave (1844-1941) was Richard's son.
• Aged 22 in 1866 when 'A Century of Painters' was published and aged 30 in 1874 when 'A Dictionary of Artists' was published, he would have had first hand knowledge and access to Richard and Samuel's work.
• Gilbert was aged 48 when he published his 'History of Watercolour Painting in England' in 1892.
• A 1905 reprint was made during Gilbert's lifetime when he was aged 61. If he had issues with the content it could have been corrected at this time.
