"Messrs. Redgrave, in their 'Dictionary of Artists of the English School' describe this as an oil-picture; they correct the statement in their 'Century of Painters of the English School'"

We can expand Bell's commentry by adding the publication dates of the Redgrave publications:

• "Messrs. Redgrave, in their 1874 publication 'Dictionary of Artists of the English School' describe this as an oil-picture; they correct the statement in their 1866 publication 'Century of Painters of the English School'"

2. The Mistake:

C.F.Bell's statement shows that he believed that the Redgraves 'corrected' their statement eight years before actually making their statement. As shown earlier in this chapter it is 'Century of Painters' which is discredited and 'Dictionary of Artists' which is correct.

C.F.Bell Worked From The Reprints

• C.F.Bell clearly worked from the reprints which were published in reverse order.
• He also ignored Gilbert Redgrave's final conclusion that 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' was an oil exhibited in 1793.
