• 1866 From information examined around 1863
  JMW Turner's first exhibited oil was 'Moonlight'.
• 1874 From information examined around 1870
  Seven to eight years had passed. Samuel had discovered that Turner's first exhibited oil was 'The Rising Squall' in 1793.

2. The Reprints

2a. The Order in which the books were Reprinted and Their Content
It is important to note that:

• The reprints took place in reverse order of the original publication dates.
• Both reprints took place after their authors had died.
• Although the reprints claimed to be updated revisions the information given in them in respect of JMW Turner's first exhibited oil was not materially changed from the information in their respective first editions.

  The 1878 reprint of 'A Dictionary of Artists' contains the latest up-to-date information
• 1890 Reprint of 1866
  The 1890 reprint of 'A Century of Painters' in one volume contains the same old 1866 subsequently discredited information in respect of JMW Turner's first exhibited oil.
