JOHN HEUGH (1811-1877)
Information about John Heugh was collected as a result of an email from University of Manchester (Whitworth). (2020-03-12). He is believed to be a merchant from the North-West and a client of Thomas Agnew. As at March 2020 Heugh was the first recorded owner of the Whitworth exhibit known as JMW Turner's 1794 RA exhibit 'Porch of Great Malvern Abbey, Worcestershire'.
The purpose of this exercise was to determine whether John Heugh could have been the first owner of either of the 1793 watercolour exhibits, 'View on the river Avon, near St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' or 'Gate of St. Augustine's Monastery, Canterbury'. Porch of Great Malvern Abbey, Worcestershire was, by reference to the Whitworth email, sold at Foster's 16th June 1862; the catalogue is listed asco as 11th June. We have found that that Heugh was born in 1816 and started collecting in 1845. He cannot be the first owner of the 1794 work.
The 'Holmewood Collection'
The 'Art Journal' 1874 shows a sale of the 'Holmewood Collection' owned by John Heugh. (Christie's 24th & 25th April. (catalogue is missing)). Anecdotal evidence from internet searches not recorded here and from unverifiable sources suggests that Heugh bought Holmewood from Sir Charles Locock around 1850. It was sold in 1874 to John James Barrow. It is not clear where Heugh lived following the sale, Boyle's 1875 shows 13 Upper Brook St.; Boyle's 1877 at 12 Upper Brook St. and at Gaunt's House, Wimborne, Dorset. Another sale of John Heugh's collection took place around May 10th 1878 over several days (catalogue said to be in The British Library). The latter appears to be his executor sale.
John Heugh's Lifespan
Registered deaths show several John Heughs. ASCO records show several John Heugh sales and most of these have been verified by a connection to Holmewood. Boyle's Directories show John Heugh at 12 or 13 Upper Brook St., Kensington for 1875, 77 & 78. In January 1879 his addresses are 12, Upper Brook St. and Peak House, Sidmouth. In April 1879 there are no Heughs. For 1880 there is a John Heugh at 15 Vicarage Gardens, Campden Hill, London W. For 1881 there are no Heughs at all. There is no Heugh in Kelly's 1878, 79 or 1882. According to Alain Truong (www.alaintruong.com) Heugh began his collection in 1845 and died in 1878. Looking at FreeBMD a John Heugh death was registered in Woolwich in December 1877. Heugh's death does not appear in the 1878 Index Society list; it is therefore likely that he died in late 1877. If the FreeBMD reference is correct his age at death was 61 and his dates therefore c1816-1877.
These DRAFT notes have been left in place for future reference. They have not all been verified.
Notes on compiling the list of Heugh's collection; particular points:
Most of the references are sales. There are few purchases recorded so either Heugh was buying privately or he inherited the collection. .
