Background

The purpose of this background section is to show that 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' emerged from a sequence of events that represent Turner's transition from watercolour to oil and helps to mitigate the problems of connoisseurship and provenance. It is emphasised that many of the individual points of reference conflict and that some references are quite simply wrong, especially where dates are concerned. Some references are vague or difficult to justify. However, what is built in this section is a 'body of evidence' and its value lies in the bringing together of diverse stories, events and people into a single consistent narrative.
