Foreword In this presentation we show that an oil painting which we have named 'Squall from St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' is the lost JMW Turner picture 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' one of two 'St. Vincent Rock oils' exhibited R.A. 1793. See: background notes on Turner's St. Vincent's Rock oils exhibited RA 1793 ! Please be aware ! 'The rising squall, hot wells,
from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'
and that misinformation that it is a watercolour is
persistent; including otherwise respectable sources such as the Tate
Gallery. This work was exhibited RA 1793, and the evidence that it was
an oil painting is
here.
