Catalogue of the remaining stock of Engravings and Drawings of The well-known Printseller, Mr. Hogarth, Who has removed to Mount Street, Grosvenor Square.

We have examined this catalogue as follows:

• For 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' (originally in the collection of Rev. Dr. Francis Russell Nixon).
  This picture is not in this catalogue.
• For 'The Country Waggon, Snowdon - Early Morning' (originally in the collection of Rev. Dr. Francis Russell Nixon).
  This picture is not in this catalogue.
• For other works originally in the collection of Rev. Dr. Francis Russell Nixon, Bishop of Tasmania. Two of the JMW Turner drawings appear in this catalogue and the buyer's name is shown illegibly but may be 'Battelines'. The two are:
  • Lot 440 Shakespeare's Clift, Dover, by J.M.W.Turner
  • Lot 441 On the Banks of the Dee, by J.M.W.Turner
  These two works were later ('On the Banks of the Dee', before 1871 and 'Shakespeare's Cliff' in the sale of 1891) in the collection of Sir William Richard Drake.
  The buyer 'Battelines' (?) also bought lot 439 (5 drawings - see below)

The Buyer, 'Battelines'

The buyer 'Battelines' did not appear anywhere else in this catalogue. The name was not found in any other catalogue of the period or in any directory. In FreeBMD a Lewis Batteline died in Hull in June 1846. Battelines could be a firm of dealers, that is, "Batteline's". There are a few instances of people with and without the 's' on the internet but none in the 1860's and no art dealers. From examination of those entries the name 'Batteline(s)' seems to be Italian. Connections between Batteline(s) and Sir William Richard Drake, the next owner of these drawings, were researched but no connection was found.

As mentioned above, this buyer also bought lot 439 marked in the catalogue as 5 drawings:

• 'Sketches from Nature by Callcott - in colours'. (4 drawings)
• 'Copy from Bassan, by West'. (1 drawing)
  Bassan may be Pierre-François Basan (1723-1797) but it is not clear to which 'West' the catalogue refers.
