CHRISTIES CATALOGUE 1864-07-09

This catalogue is of interest because analysis shows that lot 152 is 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'. The combined descriptions in lots 151 and 152 also shows this to be the former property of Rev. Dr. Francis Russell Nixon, Bishop of Tasmania. An e-mail from Christie's shows that lots 151 and 152 were, at the time of the auction, the property of 'Hogarth'. The description of the picture at lot 151 matches very closely with 'Squall at St Vincent's Rock, Bristol', the oil on canvas in our possession.

The important points arising from the analysis are as follows:

• 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol', lot 152 is an oil
• It was bought in and thus remained in the possession of Hogarth after the sale. (There are several references to its buyer at the sale being 'Reynolds', this however, is not true; it appears that 'Reynolds' was the failed bid.)
