Attribution Evidence Detail Cunningham (Oil and Year)

These notes describe briefly the factors involved in identification:

Cunningham refers to an oil of 1793

Peter Cunningham’s ‘Memoir’ describes ‘a picture of ... 1793’. The picture described by Cunningham clearly refers to an oil which he calls ‘Rising Squall Over St. Vincents Rocks At Bristol’.

Cunningham's clear references to ‘Rising Squall Over St. Vincents Rocks At Bristol’ being an oil are: 1) A change in terminology to distinguish the picture from a watercolour drawing and 2) Comparisons of the picture to the works of other artists (including Gainsborough) who were established oil masters.

The date stated, 1793, is confirmed accurate by two other pieces of evidence: 1) In relation to the date of the Pantheon fire known to have been 14th January 1792, and 2) A Royal Academy 1793 Exhibition catalogue entry which shows that Turner exhibited an oil that year.
