Successive Locations of 'The rising squall, hot wells, from
St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'
Chapter VI: The Whereabouts of 'The Rising Squall',
tracing alternative ownerships: Scope and Purpose
The Whereabouts of 'The Rising Squall', tracing
alternative ownerships
To determine successive locations of 'The rising squall, hot
wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'
To seek a contemporaneous description and find out where it might
have been abandoned
Scope and Purpose
1. Chains of posession
This chapter examines possible chains of possession of the actual picture that JMW Turner exhibited, 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' in 1793.
From the 1793 exhibition to 1864 we have determined a definitive line of succession. However, after that it beomes necessary to consider alternative 'branches' or ownerships that the picture might have taken. Pages are organised so that a particular chain of events can be followed forwards or backwards (in time).
2. Descriptions
For each location or movement of the picture evidence is sought from press cuttings, exhibition catalogues, magazines and journals to determine what the picture looked like and whether such descriptions match our picture 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol'.
In some cases it is necessary to follow a course of events for a different artwork, one that we suppose accompanied 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'. In each case descriptions of the 'associated' work will be sought and its movement determined.
3. Places of Abandonment
All locations where there is no definitive future sighting will be treated as a possible place of abandonment.
We will then seek from that address if a clearance took place in or around 2018, before August 2018 when the 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' emerged. Clearly this work is ongoing and will be updated for each new discovery.
