D00389 (right) does not bear any inscription showing when it was painted. However, another sketch of the same location, D00074 (left), is inscribed by JMW Turner:

This sketch is bound in the 'Bristol and Malmesbury Sketchbook'. The inscription is: 'The Back View of the Hot Wells from Gloustershire side'; 'BRISTOL'. The 'Bristol and Malmesbury Sketchbook' contains several highly finished watercolour drawings (of different locations) and shows signs of removed pages. Whilst it is possible that D00389 is a page removed from the sketchbook analysis does not support this proposition.

The rock complex appears only on D00389. There are no sketches of the rock complex in 'Bristol and Malmesbury Sketchbook'
