This picture was purchased from a casual antiques market in Hadleigh, Suffolk in August 2018.

From its visual appearance; late 18th century to early 19th century.

• 2018; The picture was found abandoned 'in an attic' during a house clearance and offered for sale at a 'car boot sale'.
• 2018; The picture was purchased at a 'car boot sale' by a lady antique market trader and offered for sale in a casual antiques market in Hadleigh Suffolk.
• 2018; August, purchased at the casual antiques market in Hadleigh, Suffolk by the present owner.

Location

The location, St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol was found by visual comparison with a watercolour-drawing by JMW Turner, Tate:D00389, being part of the Turner Bequest. Both D00389 (left) and 'Squall At St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' (right) show a distinctive rock complex consisting of an overhanging rock and a distinctive dome rock. In the two works this rock complex is viewed from opposite directions. In the oil the observer is looking towards the river; in the watercolour the observer is looking towards the riverbank and the old Hotwells House. Old Hotwells House was a popular location for artists and there are many illustrations of it; however, the rock complex is an ideosyncratic invention by JMW Turner.

The lighter, vertical, band on the right of the oil is a result of imperfect scanning. The anomaly to the lower right of the dome rock on the oil is the result of an old repair. These effects are less prominent when the canvas is viewed directly in daylight. More information is provided on the following pages.
