Sir Richard Glode

Sir Richard had first been married to Susannah, widow of George Lake. Susannah was the heir to the estate of Orpington in Kent, UK. If the year of an event is unknown we have written 'Next'.

1764: Susannah aquired the estate in 1764

1768: James Oldershaw is recorded as resident in Leicester and therefore it can be assumed that his daughters, twins, Margaret and Martha aged about 8 years are also there. There is no record of his wife, Elizabeth neé Wightman after 18th November 1745 although she must have been alive in around 1760 when Margaret and Martha were born - but there is no clear indication for 1768.

1770: George Lake died. The date is uncertain; there is a will registered at the National Archives, PROB/20/1567 for a 'George Lake of Greenwich, Kent' merely stating '1770'; also at National Archives, dated 3rd July 1770, for a 'George Lake of East Greenwich' is an 'inquisition of lunacy'.

1780: Margaret Oldershaw married (Rev.) James Douglas. She (and her twin sister, Martha) was about 20 years old.

1782: James Oldershaw of Rochester, formerly a surgeon of Leicester, died. Martha Oldershaw, his daughter, Margaret (neé Oldershaw) Douglas's twin sister, was about 22 years old.

1782: Margaret Martha Whiteman Douglas was born and baptised in Rochester. []

1792: Susannah died leaving the estate to Richard Glode. [National Archives; PROB 11/1217/116]

1793; Richard Glode married Martha Oldershaw. Martha and Margaret would have been about 34 years old.

1795: Sir Richard Glode was knighted.

1797: Hasted wrote [in his second edition - so may refer to an earlier year] that, "Sir Richard Glode is the present owner of the estate and at times resides here", which suggests he also resides somewhere else.

1799: Martha and Sir Richard were mentioned as husband and wife in a legal paper together with James and Margaret Douglas of Petworth, Sussex. [National Archives; DG9/255].

1804: Sir Richard Glode died at Mayfield Place.[obituary; Gentleman's Magazine 1804]

1811: Margaret Martha Whiteman Douglas married Mortimer Tucker in St. George, Hanover Square, London. She was between 29 and 38 years old.

1819: Reverend James Douglas died at Preston, Sussex. His wife, three sons and one daughter survived him. [obituary]

1820: Margaret, wife of Rev. James Douglas, died.

1824: Martha, now Lady Glode, died. [National Archives; PROB/11/1693/98
