CHRISTIES SALE 12th - 14th MAY 1860 RECONSTRUCTION
This sale is of interest for lot 168, Turner's first oil originally owned by Rev. James Douglas of Rochester.
Reconstructed entries are from Graves 'Art Sales' unless otherwise
stated.
This sale is recorded in The
Art Journal 1860 page 181. All the second day lots are oils.
Some lot numbers were missing and are placed at the current best

Graves (our machine read version) shows the date as 12th May which
places it in the first day sale - Thomas Ball's collection was in the
second day so 113 is more likely to be second day.

The Art Journal entry does not include this work.
From the Graves' entry it seems that the nephew sold the picture to
W. Hering then Hering sold the picture to Thomas Ball. The manuscript
entry mentioned in Christies e-mail probably indicates that the picture
was previously owned by W Hering ie: indicating its descent from Douglas
through Hering.

Lot 168; Rochester Castle
Lot 168; Rochester Castle
Butlin and Joll have two pictures mixed up. The picture in 'Once A Week'
is 'Rochester Castle and the Adjacent Grounds' lot 168. B&J
incompletely investigated. Turner exhibited an oil in 1793. The tour to
Rochester et al was by logic before 1793. The incident regarding the first
oil and purchase of canvas in Rochester must have been in 1792.
After leaving the first oil with Douglas Turner took the unfinished
second oil 'Rochester Castle with fishermen drawing Boats ashore in a
Gale' with him to Nixon's at Foots Cray where he finished it and left it
with Nixon.
