Study of 'The St. Vincent's Rock Oil'

Throughout the presentation a number of comments about the style of JMW Turner's early oils have been mentioned. These comments all amount to a profound difference. The lack of exhibited oils throughout 1794 and 1795 suggests that Turner was working to change something stylistically.

The only immediate comparison is 'A Watermill' oil on paper. Next, on canvas, is 'Fishermen At Sea'. Others, in between, which there must have been are now lost. The point here is that these lost works may be hiding, unrecognised, in plain sight as would 'The St. Vincent's Rock Oil' were it not for the remarkable representation of a non-existant rock on the canvas and on the known Turner watercolour.
