1905 Gilbert Redgrave

1905 Gilbert Redgrave (Part of the Redgrave-CF Bell sequence above). Confirmed that the first oil exhibit was1793. This could be the last confirmatory statement of the 1793 oil in the literature.

Gilbert Redgrave, whose uncle and father had both researched the early Turner works exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition, published 'A History of Water-Colour Painting in England' in 1905. It has been shown that a sequence of publications by the Redgraves was misrepresented by CF Bell who denied the existence of a Turner Oil in the 1793 exhibition.

Gilbert Redgrave unequivocally concludes that in 1793 Turner exhibited an oil 'The Rising Squall'. This represents a body of research starting in 1866 by his uncle and father and ending in 1905 with this publication:
