LITERARY EVIDENCE ~O~ The discovery of JMW Turner's oil on canvas exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1793 ~O~ LITERARY EVIDENCE

1862 Thornbury, 'The Life of JMW Turner RA'

1862 Thornbury, 'The Life of JMW Turner RA"; refers to a 'picture' as 'Rising Squall, Hot Wells'.

There are however, many contradictory statements in his book and no firm indication emerges. On page 258 he writes of 'Moonlight at Millbank' being Turner's 'first exhibited oil-picture' but claims on page 354 that Turner's 'produced his first oil painting' in 1798. These are not Thornbury's own views but rather the views of his contributors.

Whilst interesting and providing a wealth of information Thornbury contributes very little to this aspect of the study.
