Evelyn Joll (1977 1st Edition Butlin & Joll) wrote,
- "All these pieces of evidence are of help in the preparation of
a catalogue raisonné of Turner's paintings, and in time no doubt
our knowledge will be further increased by the emergence of lost
pictures, or of pictures at present untraced."
Stylistically different from his later works; after the
exhibition, there was a fundamental change of style and his next (oil)
exhibit was not until 1796.
(In 1835 a critic wrote of one of Turner's
early oils, 'An exhibition of his genius under a former avatar;
differing in every quality from the characteristics of his present
works.')
