• "All these pieces of evidence are of help in the preparation of a catalogue raisonné of Turner's paintings, and in time no doubt our knowledge will be further increased by the emergence of lost pictures, or of pictures at present untraced."

• 
  Stylistically different from his later works; after the exhibition, there was a fundamental change of style and his next (oil) exhibit was not until 1796.
  (In 1835 a critic wrote of one of Turner's early oils, 'An exhibition of his genius under a former avatar; differing in every quality from the characteristics of his present works.')
