Royal Academy Exhibition Lists

Lists provided below:

Notes:

1) In 1797 one of Turner's works was hung in the great room then moved to the Anti-Room following a dispute with Sir F Bourgeois RA. Since both the Turner and the Bourgeois had a rightful place in the Great Room they must have been oils. This is evidence that the Anti-Room was hung with oils.

2) For 1792 and 1793 it has been possible to adduce the layout of the Anti-Room.

3) Two of JMW Turner's exhibits of 1793 are not named in this list. These are the titles that are studied in this investigation. The entries show that one of these titles was exhibited in the Anti-Room ant the other in the Library.

4) Other than entries relating to notes 1) to 3) above the information in these lists has been extracted directly from the exhibition catalogues.

JMW Turner's RA Exhibition Exhibits and Locations 1787 - 1799

Anti-Room:
344 Fishermen Coming A Shore At Sun Set, Previous To A Gale [LOST (Mildmay) Size: 36" x 48"]
In the index (list of exhibitors). Another explanation is that Turner's picture was at 279 (in the Great Room) but it was swapped with a picture by Sir F Bourgeois RA) actually placing the Turner at 344; but another reading might be that the Bourgeois was initially hung at 279 and was moved to the Anti-Room at 344 (where he had a lanscape at 299)
