1891 Census List including Paxton House, West Drayton
As of September 2021 a list of 1891 census records for West Drayton was
available on the internet and the section around Station Road was
downloaded. (Pages printed erratically and they have been adjusted to
produce a continuous document of six pages. Handwritten annotations made
during examination have mostly been removed but some remain.)
The 1891 census records downloaded from the internet comprise a list of
properties and for each property a list of residents. Each complete record
(address and occupants) is assigned a schedule number. Where an address is
present with no occupants and no schedule number it has been treated here
as unoccupied although clearly there could be a number of reasons for such
entries (non-compliance, for example).
For the section of Station Road in which Paxton House is listed,
schedule numbers 179 to 188, there is 100% coincidence between the census
records (1891) and the map (1894) and it can be seen that the part of
Station Road that was known as 'De Burgh Crescent' consisted of the nine
properties South of the narrow strip of land adjacent to the property
shown as 'Paxton House' (divided into two dwellings on the map) directly
opposite the school. That property is described in the census records as
'Paxton House' and is the property now identified as 147 and 149 Station
Road.
- Schedule numbers 172 to 174 (in black) illustrate how the census list
is constructed to include both sides of the street.
- Properties marked up in blue are those immediately to the North of
Paxton House.
- Paxton House is labelled in green
- Houses to the South, down to The Vicarage are shown in red.
- The School and The Vicarage are both included on the census list and
the map; consequently there can be no doubt about their locations and,
in between these two locations, with 100% concordance between addresses
included on the census list and properties shown on the map there can be
no doubt about the location of Paxton House.

The census list is shown here on six pages. The occupants of Paxton
House, schedule 179, are shown as the Thompson family. They were probably
tenants because they are not shown as owners on a document from Hilligdon
Archives headed 'Deeds for Paxton House, West Drayton'.
