Key Feature
The one key feature showing that this is Turner's RRRRR is the rock complex.
This rock complex is the same in the oil and the known Turner watercolour and it was Turner's specific addition to the watercolour when he transferred Hot Wells from the sketch.
This Rock complex is Turner's metaphor for St. Vincent's Rock and note when he named the picture he used the singular 'Rock' not 'Rocks' as some others do
It was a popular place for artists and many pictures show steep cliffs but none seem to show Turner's rock complex
it may be turner's invention
and Turner seems to have abandoned it after the oil ---- it does not appear on later work - have not found it anyway.
