Preface

Joseph Hogarth (1801-1879) was an engraver, publisher, art dealer and picture restorer. He and his business associates are well documented on the internet. In 1854 he published 'Turner and Girtin's Picturesque Views, 60 Years Since' edited by Thomas Miller.

At Christie's sale of 9th July 1864 Joseph Hogarth auctioned two JMW Turner oils and at Christie's sale of 14th March 1866 he auctioned two JMW Turner watercolour-drawings, all four paintings having been formerly in the collections of Rev. Robert Nixon of Foots Cray and, later, his second son Rev. Dr. Francis Russell Nixon, Bishop of Tasmania, who had five JMW Turners in his collection, two oils and three watercolour drawings.

At the 9th July 1864 the two oils were bought in but nonetheless analysis of the sales catalogue shows that one of the pictures, lot 152, was 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'. No further transactions are found for this picture and the inference is that Joseph Hogarth died with it in his possession. The picture could have been abandoned at his business address, 96 Mount Street, Grosvenor Square. However, the business continued after Hogarth's death and if the picture had been at 96 Mount Street then it is likely that there would be some ongoing transactions recorded as indeed there was for the other JMW Turner oil, lot 151, in the sale of 9th July 1864.

Examination of his will and probate suggest a more likely scenario in which he abandoned, or rather 'hid', the picture at his private residence, Paxton House, West Drayton, which he purchased late in 1873. Note that this is not the modern-day Paxton House at Berwick upon Tweed.

Joseph Hogarth's probate shows that he died at Paxton House, West Drayton and the primary purpose of this book is to elucidate its modern address.

Having done so, the following points are considered:

• That 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' may have remained hidden there for many years.
• The timing of its removal.
• Whether a picture found recently, 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol', was removed from that property.

These points remain unresolved. However, enquiries continue to find the answers.

This second edition includes information, provided by Hillingdon Central services, about house renumbering on Station Road, see Appendix I.

1. Joseph Hogarth

Will, Codicil and Probate

Joseph Hogarth's probate shows that he died at Paxton House, West Drayton. He died on 9th October 1879 and probate was granted on 12th January 1883. This two year period of administration indicates that his estate was perhaps somewhat complicated.

His will was signed 25th November 1872 whilst he was living at 96, Mount Street.

A codicil to his will was signed on15th August 1874. Whilst Hogarth's address is not written on the codicil it can be seen that his witnesses are from West Drayton. A peculiar phrase in this codicil gives rise to a suspicion that all was not well in Joseph's life. He wrote, "I have the greatest horror of litigation".

J.M.W Turner's:
'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'

In 1862 Rev. Francis Russell Nixon, Bishop of Tasmania, returned to London from Tasmania bringing with him his art collection which included five works by J.M.W. Turner originally in the possession of his father, Rev. Robert Nixon who had acquired them directly from Turner. There were two oils and three watercolour-drawings which are documented by exhibition catalogues and press reports from Tasmania in 1845 and 1858. Whether directly or indirectly via other dealers, Joseph Hogarth came into possession of at least four of these Turners.

'The two oils were auctioned, being recorded as the property of Hogarth, at a Christies sale commencing on 9th July 1864. Lot 152 was 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' which Turner had exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1793. In this extract from the sale catalogue the initial 'J' is incorrectly given for Rev. Robert Nixon.

These two lots were unsold. Lot 151 later appeared in the collection of Sir William Richard Drake and was auctioned at his executor's sale. In 1920 it was auctioned in New York in the sale of R. Hall McCormick.

However, 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' did not emerge again during Joseph Hogarth's lifetime or following his death; this suggests that he may have retained it and, as something which was a valuable possession, deliberately hidden it as part of his attempt to circumnavigate the litigation mentioned in the codicil to his will.

Between 1862 and 1879 there are three addresses associated with Joseph Hogarth; 5 Haymarket, 96 Mount Street and Paxton House, West Drayton. Haymarket and Mount Street were sequential and served as business and residential premises. However, Joseph Hogarth lived in Paxton House, West Drayton from its purchase in 1873 to his death in 1879 whilst the business continued at Mount Street. If he did hide some valuable personal possessions Paxton House would seem to be the most likely hiding place.

2. Paxton House, West Drayton

Its Modern Address

The location of Joseph Hogarth's Paxton House, West Drayton was found by comparison of: a list of addresses from the 1891 census, an 1894 map and a modern map.

• 1891 Census records from FreeCen, Middlesex 1891, Uxbridge, Piece No. RG12\1018.
• 1894 map of Station Road, West Drayton showing individual houses.
• Modern map of Station Road, West Drayton showing house numbers.

A schedule of documents held by Hillingdon Local Studies, Archives and Museum Services and corresponding entries on the National Archives Discovery website provided sufficient information to place Joseph Hogarth in Paxton House from 31st December 1873 at which time the property was known as 2 Orchard Villas. Hillingdon's Street Naming and Numbering Services confirmed that 2 Orchard Villas is now 149 Station Road.

Additional information from the Post Office Directory of 1874 shows a previous occupant of 2 Orchard Villas, station master Henry Mager, and an Arthur Elve at 1 Orchard Villas.

From these sources a consistent, albeit incomplete, history of this area emerges and is discussed in detail in Appendix I. The present address of Paxton House, originally 2, Orchard Villas, is found to be:

The oil painting on canvas 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' was sold in Hadleigh, Suffolk on 11th August 2018.

Examination of modern documents show no recent planning or building activity at 149 but does show works carried out on 147 in late 2017 following its sale on 19th July 2017. Correspondence with estate agents and a previous owner of 147 have established that 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' was not recovered from the property prior to that sale. Agents for this purchaser have said by e-mail that, during subsequent renovations, unwanted items cleared from the house were put into a skip for disposal.

The question remains as to whether 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' was removed from 147 (or 149) Station Road, West Drayton during the period 20th July 2017 to 10th August 2018.

• At left of centre on this map is a building marked 'School'.
• On the opposite side of Station Road there is a building spanning two sites delineated by a line drawn from the road approximately halfway across the building and continuing to the eastern boundary of the two sites.
• To the South of this building there is a narrow strip of land leading to a field behind a row of properties set out in a crescent facing Station Road. (At the North-East corner of the field are a group of buildings which do not appear on the modern map.)
• On the bottom right of the map is a building marked as 'Vicarage'. It appears in the same area as 'Rectory Court' on the modern map. Rectory Court appears to be a redevelopment of the 1894 Vicarage.
• Note that between the row of properties set out as a crescent and the Vicarage there are two little buildings set one with its frontage on Station Road and the other behind it.

• Slight adjustments have been made to achieve the overlay; a little anticlockwise rotation and a minor change to the aspect ratio of the overlay.
• It can be seen that there is reasonable concordance between the overlay and the modern map for the building opposite the school and the nine properties to the south (although the school is now demolished) .
• The building opposite the school is 147 and 149 Station Road.
• The Six Bells (now rebuilt on the same site), the Vicarage (now redeveloped as Rectory Court), and the South-East corner of St. Martin's Church are all aligned within a few metres.

These are compared with the 1894 map on the next page. Properties between The Vicarage and the School are both shown on the map and listed in the census; they show 100% concordance and there can be no doubt that the property known as Paxton House in 1891 was part of the the modern day 147 and 149 Station Road. There have been other sites proposed for Paxton House during the early 20th century. However, Joseph Hogarth died in Paxton House in 1879 so it is the location at that date which is determined and any later revisions, renumbering and so on, are not material in this context but are examined in Appendix I.

  • Before 1873 Numbers 1 and 2 Orchard Villas were built; semi-detached villas, schedule numbers 178 & 179. De Burgh Villas, the unoccupied 1 Orchard Villas (shown here) and the nine De Burgh Crescent properties did not exist at this time.
  • Schedule number 178 as 1 Orchard Villas was occupied by Arthur Elve. Schedule number 179 as 2 Orchard Villas was occupied by 32 year old stationmaster, Henry Mager.
  • On 31st December 1873 Joseph Hogarth bought 2, Orchard Villas. (see National Archives Ref: MC6/WD/1)

  • Around this time 1 & 2 De Burgh Villas was built, another semi-detached. Schedule numbers 176 & 177 on this map.
  • In 1879 De Burgh Cresent was built and the leases were assigned on 29th September. [London Metropolitan Archives].
  • In 1879 Joseph Hogarth died on 9th October.
  • In 1883 Probate was granted to Joseph Hogarth's executors. It shows Hogarth's widow, Elizabeth, in occupation of Paxton House.
  • In 1891 Census information shows 1 Orchard Villas unoccupied but shows occupancy at 2, Orchard Villas and Paxton House with Paxton House being next door to 1 De Burgh Crescent. (numbered 180 above, in red)(not to be confused with 1 De Burgh Villas, numbered 176 above, in blue).
  • In 1894 the Ordnance Survey map was published.

• In the West Drayton section, col 2, line 19, Henry Mager is recorded as station master. In the alphabetical names section, left column, his address is shown as 2, Orchard Villas.
• Arthur Elve is shown at 1 Orchard Villas, Joseph Hogarth is shown without an address.
• In the commercial section (col. 3) Frederick Winship is named as a butcher. In the 1891 census he is shown residing at 1 De Burgh Villas.

Top: This record indicates that Paxton House was previously 2, Orchard Villas; confirmed by the two records below. References to Glenelg and No. 111 Station Road are more likely to be renaming of the property shown as No. 1 Orchard Villas on the census list (see Appendix I). The extract about Mrs Kral's dogs was found in Google Books, 'The pomeranian - A Complete Anthology of the Dog', Vintage Dog Books 2010, ISBN 978-14455-2641-6 in which 'Glenelg' and '111' are in used together. Mr Kral's probate shows that the number, 111 was in use in 1946.
[Another reference, to 121 Station Road, was found in 'A Woman Lived Here' by Alison Vale (2018) ISBN: 978-1-4721-4006-7 Ch 14, '121 Station Road (now razed) ... In the early years of the 1930s, Station Road, West Drayton was ... a pub at number 125, The Six Bells ...', but 125 is the modern number - 121 was probably old numbering (like the Kral's 111). If so, and counting from Glenelg as 111, number 121 would have been 3 De Burgh Crescent which has definitely not been 'razed'.]

Although the compiler of the Hillingdon documents has assumed that Paxton House was renamed Glenelg it is more likely that Glenelg was originally the detached building just to the north. (see Appendix I)

3. A Picture Found

Finding 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol'

On 11th August 2018 a picture was found in Hadleigh Vintage Market (Suffolk). The seller said that it had been recovered together with other items from an attic during a house clearance and sold at a car boot sale.

The picture found in Hadleigh Vintage Market is called 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' named for the location of the scene as determined from two sketches by J.M.W. Turner which are held by Tate Gallery as part of the Turner Bequest.

Turner's depiction of St. Vincent's Rock (an overhanging rock with a smaller dome shaped rock) is seen in his watercolour-drawing on the left, inset, looking towards the riverbank on the Gloucestershire side and on the oil on canvas from the opposite direction, on the right.

A Unique Feature

The picture was found unframed. However, it was partially attached to its stretcher. This stretcher is unique in as much as the joints are of a peculiar design each fitted with a single key which facilitates stretching in both directions.

4. Building and Planning Activity at 147 & 149 Station Road, West Drayton

The origin of 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol'

The question now arising is:

• Was 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' recovered from 147 & 149 Station Road, West Drayton.

Planning Applications at 147 & 149 Station Road, West Drayton

'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' was recovered just before August 2018 and sold, first at a car boot sale and then in Hadleigh Vintage Market.

Two planning applications were found. For 149 an application made in 1982 is too old to be of significance. However, an application on 147 was made 25th August 2017 and withdrawn on 9th July 2018. This timing coincides with recovery of the picture, 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol'.

Owner's and Agent's Comments

147 Station Road was sold on 19th July 2017 the vendor on this occasion has been contacted and has confirmed that he did not recover the picture.

The planning application above was submitted on 25th August 2017. Agents for this purchaser have said by e-mail that, during subsequent renovations, unwanted items cleared from the house were put into a skip for disposal. There is some mystery surrounding this information as they do not seem to know who, which contractor or house clearance people actually carried out the disposal.

5. Conclusions

'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol'

On 20th July 2017 the picture, 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' was either still hidden at 147 & 149 Station Road or it was never there. If it was hidden at 147 &149 Station Road it may have been removed and may have been placed in the rubbish skip.

Was 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' removed from Paxton House?

If this picture was removed from Paxton House, (147 & 149 Station Road, West Drayton) the former home of Joseph Hogarth, the relevant dates are:

• Removed from the property after 20th July 2017.
• Sold at a car boot sale before 10th August 2018.
• Then sold in Hadleigh Vintage Market on 11th August 2018.

Enquiries - to trace the two traders involved and to find out whether 'Squall at St. Vincent's Rock, Bristol' was removed from 147 Station Road and subsequently sold at a car boot sale - are ongoing as at June 2022.

Appendix I

Finding the Location Of Paxton House

This exercise was undertaken to identify the location of Paxton House in 1879, the year in which Joseph Hogarth died.

The main evidential features are:

• In the street naming and numbering records of Hillingdon Council 'Paxton House' is not recorded. In these records the semi detached property now known as 147 and 149 Station Road was originally known as 1 & 2 Orchard Villas. We have no way of knowing which side of the semi-detached building was number 1 and which was number 2. Conventionally, when viewed from the street, number 1 would be on the left hand side and that is the convention used in this exercise.
• It is clear from the records described here as 'Deeds of Paxton House', recorded in the National Archives, that Joseph Hogarth bought 2 Orchard Villas on 31st December 1873. It is also reasonably clear that this was the property that he (unofficially) renamed 'Paxton House'

Prima facie then, 'Paxton House' was the building now known as 149 Station Road. However, there is uncertainty as to the internal arrangements; as mentioned above there is uncertainty as to which side was number 2, roof spaces were often cojoined (The picture, 'Squall at St Vincent's Rock, Bristol', and other valuables were said to have been removed from an attic during house clearance) and boundaries changed.

Further uncertainty was introduced by the compiler of the National Archives Records who recorded that Paxton House was formerly known as '2 Orchard Villas, subsequently 'Glenelg', now 111 Station Road'. This cannot be correct; Hillingdon's street numbering records show that the original 2 Orchard Villas (Joseph Hogarth's 'Paxton House') became No.115 in a renumbering that took place in 1931. There is documentary evidence that 'Glenelg' was 111 Station Road in or around 1936 and therefore 'Paxton House' and 'Glenelg' were different buildings.

Finding the Location Of Paxton House

The properties involved in this appraisal are clustered around the present 147 & 149 Station Road which is now a semi-detached house, 147 being an HMO and 149 being divided internally into four privately owned appartments. Original buildings to the north, Glenelg and 1 & 2 De Burgh Villas, have been destroyed. To the south however, nine addresses formerly known as 1 to 9 De Burgh Crescent still stand essentially as they were in the late nineteenth century. There is considerable confusion in certain narratives between 1 & 2 De Burgh Villas and 1 to 9 De Burgh Crescent. The difference (and thus the precise location of De Burgh Crescent) is best illustrated as a map:

It has not been possible to look at every original document. However, lists of archives are found to be sufficiently detailed to derive information required for this exercise and these lists are illustrated along with other documents to assist future researchers. It should be mentioned that there was some evidence that suggested previous research into this matter had been carried out; for example the will of Joseph Hogarth had been previously requested.

• At this time there is still no sign of 1 & 2 De Burgh Villas and it is clear that De Burgh Crescent has not yet been built.

• 1 Orchard Villas, New Building ? - If a new house was built just to the north of the original 1&2 Orchard Villas around this time the two buildings, new and the semi-detached existing house, may have been respectively, 1 Orchard Villas (detached), 2 Orchard Villas (north semi) and Paxton House (south semi)
• 2 Orchard Villas (previously known as 1 Orchard Villas) - Elve was in occupation
• Paxton House (previously 2 Orchard Villas) - Hogarth in occupation

1878

Probate of Arthur Charles Elve 1878

• 2 Orchard Villas, (previously 1 Orchard Villas ?) Arthur Charles Elve (died here), widow, Elizabeth remained
  Elve died in June 1878 and the house had been renumbered at this time. Construction of the new house must have been completed for the renumbering to have taken place so it has been shown as under construction in 1877 although it could have been earlier.
  There are other possibilities. The basic evidential material shows that, in 1874, Arthur Charles Elve lived at 1 Orchard Villas and that 2 Orchard Villas had been renamed 'Paxton House'. Above it has been assumed that a new building took the address '1 Orchard Villas' and that the original 1 Orchard Villas was renamed '2 Orchard Villas'. None of this renaming appears to have been official; Hillingdon Street Naming and Numbering services have recorded just 1 and 2 Orchard Villas renamed as 113 and 115 Station Road in 1931 then 147 and 149 in 1963. Apart from Elve's probate there is no evidence of new building until its tentative entry in the 1891 census (as 1 Orchard Villas) and then as 'Glenelg' in 1894. So it is possible that the new building, Glenelg, was not built until 1893/94. How then can the 1878 Elve probate evidence and the 1891 census schedules (showing both 1 and 2 Orchard Villas and Paxton House) be reconciled. The answer lies in the plan of 1 and 2 Orchard Villas. From the 1894 map the building appears to be double bay fronted with porches on each side. On the modern photograph; however,
  ...
  the potential for dividing the building into three addresses is clear. Perhaps this was the layout in the early years; around 1877 to 1892. So the 1891 census information may simply be a result of this (unofficial) division of the property into three instead of two.
