1863 Photographic Society Exhibition A frame containing six copies of Turner January 1863 to 2 March 1863 at Gallery of the Society of British
Artists, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall East
Conjectural Analysis The only information we have for exhibit 471 is that on the next page The time is January 1863 so the photographs were taken in 1862. Bishop Nixon arrived in London on 22nd May 1862 with his five Turners. The two Turner oils were in the possession of Hogarth by 9th July 1864. If Nixon had sold them to Hogarth soon after returning from Tasmania Hogarth would have ample time say August to November 1862 to photograph them. There is no other evidence to suggest that this exhibit contained photographs of the Bishop's five Turners. |
