Image Comparisons

These images at a scale of one pixel per mm show their relative sizes and more detail than the one pixel per 5mm elsewhere. The bigger picture comparisons cannot be shown on this scale.

1791 Turner's sketchbook sized watercolour 'Back View of the Hot Wells, Bristol' 7" x 10"
Cunningham does not mention this work but it is closely related to the candidate oil by the distinctive rock group; left on the watercolour, right on the oil. It should be noted that this watercolour has sketching on the other side making it unlikely that Turner had any intention of exhibiting this work.

Cunningham described this as one of Turner's 'earlier excesses'. The original size of the candidate oil picture and this watercolour are the same. This watercolour was painted just after 14th January 1792, the oil was painted later that year (after Turner's Canterbury and Medway Towns tour) or early 1793.
