'Back View Of The Hot Wells, Bristol'

The sketch is inscribed by Turner 'Back View of the Hot Wells'...so there is no doubt about the location. However, note that the overhanging rock and domed rock group do not appear in this sketch (but do appear in the later small watercolour D000389).
This page is bound in the 'Bristol and Malmesbury Sketchbook, folio 3 recto as it now stands so there is no doubt about the date, 1791. The verso is not imaged on the Tate Research site but is said to be blank except for the Turner Bequest 'stamp'.

Rock, Bristol’ was the watercolour RA 1793, No.323 exhibited in the
Library. (The evidence herein shows that the catalogue entries were
tranposed. The watercolour exhibited at No.323 in the Library was 'View On
The River Avon, Near St. Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’; ‘The
Rising Squall, Hot Wells, from St Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’ was
an oil exhibited RA 1793, No.263 in the 'anti-room'. )
