These notes describe briefly the factors involved in identification:

The Royal Academy 1793 Exhibition catalogue

Three Turner Works appear in the 1793 Royal Academy Exhibition catalogue One in the Anti-Room, two in the Library. In 1793 the Anti-Room held oils; watercolours were hung in the library. It is concluded that Turner submitted two watercolours and an oil.

One of the watercolours (323) was shown in the catalogue as ‘The Rising Squall, Hot Wells, from St Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’ and the oil (263) was described (in the catalogue) as ‘View On The River Avon, Near St. Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’.

In modern times various researchers have attributed one or other of three of Turner’s watercolours to ‘The Rising Squall, Hot Wells, from St Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’. However, not one of these depicts a rising squall but two of them match perfectly the description ‘View On The River Avon, Near St. Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’ It is concluded that there was a transposition of the two very similar titles in the 1793 RA catalogue.

‘The Rising Squall, Hot Wells, from St Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’
‘View On The River Avon, Near St. Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’

This conclusion leads to the proper title for the oil (263) being ‘The Rising Squall, Hot Wells, from St Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’
