The Royal Academy Exhibition Catalogue for 1793
The Royal Academy Exhibition Catalogue for 1793 provides evidence that JMW Turner exhibited 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' in 1793. Due to a transposition of titles error in the catalogue it does not provide evidence of which room it was exhibited in or evidence that it was an oil.[see: Chapter II - A mistake in the 1793 catalogue by transposition of titles]

The RA catalogue states that 'The rising squall, hot wells, from St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' was in the Library with watercolours at exhibit No. 323. We have shown in Chapter II that this was a mistake by transposition of two of JMW Turner's titles and that the picture was an oil hung in the Anti-Room at No. 263.
Peter Cunningham said that the picture was noticed 'by the wiser few'. However, newspaper references have not yet been found for this picture. 'Anderdon Papers' and press cuttings, 'CRI-1' at the Royal Academy have references to the exhibition and to other exhibits.
