UNTESTED HYPOTHESES

In scientific investigation it sometimes becomes necessary to propose and test a hypothesis. In this case we have an untested hypothesis viz: That JMW Turner painted the watercolour D00389 initially without the rock complex and later painted the oil 'The rising Squall' and added the rock complex to D00389 at the same time. The evidence for this is the reported staining of D00389 and possibly oily stains in the Bristol an Malmesbury Sketchbook. This hypothesis is secondary to the identification and it makes no difference to it. It is however, an avenue of research which it is felt would be interesting and informative. If you are in a position to investigate this please contact us by e-mail.(see also The Rising Squall oil or watercolour)
