SIR FRANK SHORT (FRANCIS) - ENGRAVER

born: 19th June 1857, died: 22nd April 1945

Of interest as an engraver of Turner's work ant to look for engravings of the Drake collection. Of particular interest is 'A seapiece, after Turner' found in Art Prices Current

Note that the title of lot 106 is 'A seapiece, after Turner (92)' and there is another engraving in the lot. Note that another copy of probably the same seapiece is listed at lot 102. It could be 'The Rising Squall...' The (92) shows up in lot 241 13th & 14th July 1914, Sothebys but as (S.92) (page 516 1913-1914). It first appears Oct 17th, 1912 without the (92), Putticks 1912-1913 page 5.

This would be possible if Short engraved the Sir William Richard Drake collection. Drake died 1891 when Short was 34 and the picture would be engraved during the 20 years 1871 to 1891.

If the picture descended to Ella Katherine Hornsby-Drake it provides another opportunity 1891 to 1914 (the date of the above auction) when Short was aged 34 to 57. Note that Short was 57 when the works above were auctioned.

Note to examine and cross reference Short's etchings with the Drake and other collections. 'Wreck of the Orangeman' does not appear to be a Turner, searches are hampered by references to the Irish connection - but it does seem to be a wrecked ship off Dover.
