Our copy of this catalogue has restricted rights and we cannot reproduce it digitally. It has some manuscript annotations not all included here. This catalogue is of interest due to the inclusion of lots 89 to 102 headed 'Property of a Gentleman'. Three works by JMW Turner are included in this section including 'View on the river Avon, near St. Vincent's rock, Bristol' exh 1793. The 'Gentleman' is Leonard Huskinson, the artist, also known as 'Huskisson' and his section is examined in detail, including evidence identifying him as the 'Gentleman' at:

Highlights from the auction, its overall layout and structure are analysed here and it is of particular note that the Huskinson/Property of a Gentleman section makes no specification as to whether the works are drawings or oils.

Layout of the catalogue

• Cover
  This shows: 'Modern Pictures and Drawings' from 'Different Private Collections' including [part of] Evans; and Twenty Drawings property of Radcliffe.
• Section 1
  This is headed 'Drawings' there are no subheadings and there follows a list of lots 1 to 40. The reference to 'Different Private Collections' on the front page appears to refer to this section (and section 5 below).
• Section 2
  Under a heading for Herbert N Evans there is a mixture of pictures (oils) [ie: no description of media], sketches by J Constable [a separate subheading], 'watercolours' [lot 65 marked] and lot 67 is marked as 'a drawing'. This section covers lots 41 to 68. This section heading appears on the front page.
• Section 3
  Covering lots 69 to 88 and under the heading '...Radcliffe' with no mention of 'drawing' against the 20 lots. This section must be the 'Twenty Drawings property of Radcliffe' noted on the front page.
• Section 4
  Heading 'Property of a Gentleman' lots 89 to 102 which include the three Turner works listed in Redford and the Landseer listed in Graves. Although nothing is marked as such, this looks like a mixture of oils and drawings. This section does not appear on the front page.
• Section 5
  The final section of the catalogue headed 'A Different Property' then subheaded 'Pictures'. Lots 103 to 152 with no further divisions or subheadings.This, together with Section 1, looks like the 'Different Private Collections' on the Front Page [ie: misc. owners, not just one owner] Section 1 being drawings and this Section 5 being the pictures (oils).

The catalogue is marked up but some of the writing is difficult to read (the writer may have been Greek because 'Heritase' is spelled with a Greek lowercase sigma and another writer has changed occurrances of this to 's') so some of these names may be inaccurate. Some annotations have been lost in the tight binding. Against some lots a 'Do' mark is written instead of a name. In the list below these lot numbers are in brackets. This list gives the names and lot numbers purchased. 'White' and 'E.F.White' are marked up separately so it is possible that there were two 'Whites' present although the two lots purchased were consecutive suggesting that there was just one 'White'.
