THE highest Bidder to be the Buyer; and if anydispute ' arise between two or more Bidders, the Lots so in dispute shall be immediately put up again and re -sold. II. No person to advance lessthan Is.; above Five Pounds, 5s. ; and so on in proportion. III. The Purchasers to give in their Names and Places of Abode and to pay down 5s. in thePound, or more, in part of payment, or the whole of the Purchase -Money, if re- quired; in default of which, the Lot or Lots so purchased to beimmediately put up again and re -sold. . 101 " The Cherry -seller." This work is thus described, inWilkie's " Collins's Memoirs :"-' Painted forMr. T. C. Higgins; was a large picture ; the figure of the fruit -vendor himself being a careful study of ' OldOdell.' His donkey stands beside him at the cottage gate, bearing the cherry -laden paniers, from which he is weighing out part of his stock in tradeto a girl, who waits, dish in hand, ready to receive it. The other principal figures are, a -child crawling under the donkey to pick up a cherry that hasdropped, and a boy who is holding the animal's head. The background of the picture is formed by the pic- turesque and irregular village street. Aperfectly simple and national air pervades the whole composition ; its minutest technicalities, as well as its most important objects, are laboured toan extraordinary degree of finish. The tone of colour in the picture is bright, pure, and truthful, and perfectly suggestive of the clear Englishsunshine, that is glittering over the rustic scene." 14 a 15

The bold originality of the fisherman's position, and thestriking contrasts of the whole landscape behind and above him, made this one of the most remarkable and powerful pictures of its class that thepainter has exhibited.
