JMW TURNER
Seascape with a Squall Coming up
oil on canvas 457mm x 609mm, 18"x 24"; 1903/04
B&J 143
Currently in the posession of Fuji Museum, Tokyo, this picture is of interest because its provenance begins with its purchase from Turner by Jack Bannister in 1803/4 thus establishing Bannister as a first purchaser of Turner's early works. Bannister's executor sale at Foster's on 28th March 1849 appears to be the source of this information but the catalogue is missing.
This picture is also of interest in respect of the disputed 'Fishing Boats off the Kent Coast' and its possible relationship with 'Fishing Boats in a Stiff Breeze'
