JMW TURNER

Avon Gorge and Bristol Hotwell

Referred to elsewhere in these notes as 'The Bristol Watercolour' the title 'Avon Gorge and Bristol Hotwell' is the modern title of Bristol Museum: K816.

At the time of writing, although it has not been proved absolutely and conclusively, it has emerged as highly likely that this is Turner's 1793 exhibit:

View on the river Avon, near St. Vincent's rock, Bristol

Caution: There is an error in the RA 1793 Exhibition Catalogue - two of Turner's titles have been transposed.

This watercolour was owned by the Fussey Family

It was owned by Leonard Huskinson (known as Huskisson died 1870) in1864.

Search for his disposal to Mr. Hull between 1864 and 1871 (executor sale?)

And transfer from Mr Hull to the Fussey Family currently thought to be Mr. Proctor between 1864 and (very upper limit) 1902

Speculative possible approximate timeline:

Mr Proctor born 1830, married 1855 (age 25), had daughter 1857(age 28), bought Bristol Watercolour 1872 (age 42), died 1895 (age 65)
