The 1891 Drake sale catalogue: Possible reasons for the omission of 'The Hotwells, Bristol - Storm coming on':

4. It was wrongly identified in the catalogue (there is a corrected misidentification in this catalogue!)

The first thing to note is the possibility of error: Lot 148 on Page 19 printed 'Bronzino' has been crossed out and changed. [1]

Second, there are oils among the watercolours - Lot 260 et seq.W F Ready are marked 'oils' [2]

All entries in the watercolours now checked

There are three lots that could be the St. Vincent's Rock Oil misidentified. [5], [6] & [7]. If misidentification has happened the most likely lot is '1. A Rocky Coast Scene' [7] because this is not allocated an artist.

[3] None of these Turner watercolours are at all likely to have been a misidentified St. Vincent's Rock Oil.

[4] It is not clear whether these works were exhibited whilst Drake owned them.
