AFTER 1864 TO THE DRAKE SALE

7th July 1864 to 27th June 1891

The Christies 7th July 1864 sale placed a pair of pictures with Reynolds. The identity of Reynolds is unknown. The primary source of this information is The Art Journal, September 1864 page 267. They are both oils. The titles:

'The Country Waggon, Snowden, Early Morning' [note the erroneous spelling of Snowdon].

'The Hotwells, Bristol - Storm coming on'.

The next point of information is an 1891 sale, 1891 Art Journal page 312 and Armstrong's entry for that sale (published 1902)

'The Country Waggon, Snowden, Early Morning' is in the catalogue as: Snowdon, from Moel Madoc'. Its title is not mentioned in The Art Journal but in Armstrong (NB: published 11 years later) it is 'Snowdon: Waggoners - Early Morning'

'The Hotwells, Bristol - Storm coming on'. is not in the catalogue

List of reasons for the omission of 'The Hotwells, Bristol - Storm coming on':

• Drake did not take posession; Reynolds bought it for or sold it to somebody else.
• Drake took posession but disposed of it at an earlier sale between 1864 and 1891.
• It was on loan to an exhibition - when Drake died and at the time of the sale - leaving it in the hands of the executors.
• It was wrongly identified in the catalogue (there is a corrected misidentification in this catalogue!)
• The picture had been put aside say in a loft or otherwise out of sight. Literally abandoned. Perhaps damaged or maybe its identity had become suspect and Drake was not happy to display it. Drake's address is in the catalogue but it is not clear if his collection was there.

Drake's Address: Prince's Gardens, and Oatlands Lodge, Weybridge
It is possible that this is a London location (Prince's Gardens) and a country estate (Oatlands Lodge - Weybridge, Surrey)
The latter could be one of a few locations to be determined if it becomes an issue.
