CHRISTIE'S SALE 6th MARCH 1914 - GOMM COLLECTION
Note that image files are labelled 'Grant' - not 'Gomm' - merely the
result of an earlier exercise.
There is a JMW Turner on page 16. It is an oil. In the catalogue it is
not listed as part of the Gomm Collection but with 'Different Properties,
starting on page 11 with 'Drawings' and on page 13, 'Pictures'.
The entry is as follows:
"J.M.W. TURNER R.A.
69.
Portrait
of Thomas Naylor, Esq. Mayor of Liverpool,
1795
In brown coat, with brass buttons; white vest and
stock, seated
29½ in. by 24½ in."
It is not clear whether the year 1795 refers to the year of painting or
to the year when Naylor was in office. However, Thomas Naylor is in a list
(not reproduced) of 'Mayors of the City of Liverpool between '1795-96
Peter Baker' and '1796-97 George Dunbar'. Unfortunately, at the time of
writing the year shown for Thomas Naylor is just '1976' - transposition of
digits - it is fair to assume that Naylor was mayor for part of 1796.
'1795' in the catalogue could just be a mistake or could mean
'painted in 1795' and Naylor's description as being 'Mayor of Liverpool'
being , as it were, additional information about Naylor.
This sale is also recorded in Art Prices Current 1913-1914
