DETAILS OF PICTURES HUNG IN THE ANTI-ROOM IN 1793

A review of the pictures exhibited in the Anti-Room [sic] in 1793 to determine whether the work by JMW Turner at No. 263 was an oil or a watercolour.
From Paul Sandby's drawings of 1792 it is shown that the Anti-Room [sic] was effectively the entrance to the Great Room. During the exhibition of 1792 there was just one door between them on the East wall of the Anti-Room. On the West wall of the Anti-Room there was an open entrance/exit onto the stairs. The main doorway to the building was beyond. This arrangement appears to have been the setup for some years and there is nothing to suggest that 1793 was different.
From a catalogue marked up by Edward Bell (RA, AND/8/196) it is clear that four pastils ('crayons' as Bell calls them) by John Russell were hung in the Anti-Room; displayed two on the left and two on the right of the door leading to the Great Room (This arrangement of Russell's pastils appears to be 1792 and 1793 only.). The main question to determine is whether the other 1793 Anti-Room exhibits were oils. Oils would be expected and Bell's notes are extensive. If there had been other media present (watercolours, drawings, miniatures) one might have expected him to mark them appropriately in the same way that he annotated the Russells. Since Edward Bell did not do this (but see the notes below for No. 300; a doubtful annotation of the George Beck) then the inference is that they are all oils.
JMW Turner's exhibit similarly would be an oil. However, the title listed at number 263 is shown in literary references to be a watercolour whereas the JMW Turner title listed at 323 (and thus with watercolours in the Library) is shown to be an oil. The two titles are very similar and it appears that the catalogue compiler transposed them.

Sir William Dunbar (died 1793) appears to be the grandfather of the
wife of Stavely's son.
Staveley's portraits are inconsistent. The largest are around 36"
x 24", others are miniatures, canvas, panel and oil on paper are
recorded. All exhibited works are portraits.

In the Edward Bell annotated catalogue in the Anderdon papers (RA,
AND/8/196) a curly bracket against 298 and 299 above shows them to be
'crayons'. The bracket extends half way (vertically) across the entry for
G. Beck which may indicate that this also is a 'crayon'. In the notes (RA,
AND/8/199) Edward Bell has written:
