Daryl's 1878 publication, 'Picture Amateur's Handbook and Dictionary of Painters' was published the same year as Samuel Redgrave's second edition of 'A Dictionary of Artists' .

Daryl does not seem to have attempted any research of his own and the text, illustrated below, is essentially a copy of Samuel Redgrave's first edition:
