September 1864 The Art Journal & 'Dr Nixon'
It is in September 1864 that the activity during the earlier part of the year becomes clearer. The Art Journal shows that the owner of the picture was Dr. Nixon and that Dr Nixon's father had aquired 'The 1793 Hotwells Oil' directly from Turner. There is a mistaken initial 'J' and a lack of a full name for Dr Nixon in the report but even so the information provided enables identification beyond doubt. The timing also fits with the return of Rev. Dr. Francis Russell Nixon, Bishop of Tasmania, to England in 1863 where he took up a clerical appointment in York. He was in ill Health and retired to Italy soon afterwards.
