Art and History of Art

J.M.W. Turner,
His First Exhibited Oil Painting

Controversal but completely documented with evidence, the story of 'The Rising Squall', exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1793.
A chapter headed 'What Went Wrong' shows how art historians have been misled by a simple mistake made by the writer C.F. Bell in 1901 and uncovers a possible misprint in the catalogue for the 1793 Exhibition.

The Mystery of 'The Rising Squall'

The Location of Paxton House & Orchard Villas, West Drayton

Joseph Hogarth's Last Address

Research to determine the location of Paxton House and Orchard Villas where Joseph Hogarth died in 1879. Paxton House was found to have been demolished but Orchard Villas is still standing andit is suggested that this was a credible location for Joseph Hogarth to have hidden 'The Rising Squall'.

Citations are all copied into the book thus avoiding lost evidence due to sites being removed from the internet and books being lost or going out of print.

Illustrations and photographs include Paxton House in 1950 and the area around the nearby Six Bells pub in the early 20th C. External links are included in addition to suggestions for further historical research.
